Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze a claim, “The end of social classes”, which was brought in, and it is currently dealt with inside Brazil’s sociology field. This country’s brought new meanings to social class, which was initially coped with in Western Europe and the United States. Brazilian intellectuals have discussed people and social movements beyond the social class concept. In addition, this claim was incorporated to unions and other kinds of movements. In this context, there is a likely contradiction between the “brought in” argument and actual political conflicts in Brazil. Learning about the above mentioned claim and how we incorporate it to sociology in Brazil is central to the idea of understanding labor and collective action.
