Abstract

The purpose of this contribution is to provide an overview of obesity in contemporary society from the perspective of epidemiological and social risk, allowing to reflect on the role of the risk discourse that justifies treatments and preventive measures based on foods and specialized diets, drugs, exercise, bariatric surgery and aesthetic surgery, neurological devices, gastric, genetic research, among others, which are promoted as preventive and curative for this condition. So it is necessary to question the possibility of the existence of new risks to human health from the use of such “goods” for this population sector and the need for updating the notion of obesity as a risk.
