This study presents an approach to the development of scientific activity throughout the course of the 20th century, within the framework of the specialized studies on physical growth and development in Mexican children. It is based on an extended, but selected, bibliography regarding physical growth and development variables applicable to Mexican children without any observable pathological condition, in the age range from conception to 21 years old. In this paper we present an initial bibliometric analysis of 438 selected documents. Trends are traced with regard to edition formats, decennial rhythms of publication, the broad spectrum of periodic journals involved, first author professional profiles, the general approach of each work, the period of time between the generation of raw data and its publication and finally, the geographical distribution of empirical works in the Mexican federal states.
