Algunos aspectos a considerar del envejecimiento de la población mexicana de principios del siglo XXI: funcionalidad física y actividad cotidiana

The purpose of this document is to analyze the characteristics of physical functionality in people over 50 years old, measured by the manifestation of the difficulty to carry out the Basic Activities of the Daily Life (ABVD): to walk, to take a bath, to eat, to go to bed and to use the toilet, and Instrumental Activities of go to shopping Daily Life (AIVD): to prepare foods, go to shopping, to take medications and to manage money considering differences by sex and age. Also different socio-demographic factors associated to the high incidence of the difficulty to carry out such activities are evaluated. The information is from Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Envejecimiento en México (ENASEM) collected in 2001, and models of logistic regression are applied. The results indicate that the probability of presenting high level of difficulty to carry out the ABVD increases with age, in men, in separate or divorced individuals, in individuals that don’t work, and if the individual perceives his own health condition as bad. The probability of presenting high level of difficulty to carry out AIVD is also increased with the age, in urbanized communities, in men, in individuals with low studies, in divorced or communities separate individuals, in speakers of indigenous language, in individuals that don’t work, in those that don’t receive retirement or pension incomes and in those that reported worse health condition.
