Human remains exposed to fire have not been sufficiently considered in bioarchaeological investigations, particularly in the Maya area. This is due to the advanced state of their deterioration in many cases and the lack of adequate criterion to interpret their exposure to fire in cultural terms. This has been compounded by the contexts in which exposed skeletal material are registered including isolated assemblages that are difficult to classify archaeologically. In this paper, traces of heat exposition on bones from Calakmul are studied and interpreted using analytical approaches that allow us to contribute new data to the role of heat exposition in ancient Maya Society.Downloads
