Abstract

The arrival of the electric light, in the late nineteenth century, transfigured the appearance of the cities at night turning them into a gigantic brilliant shop window. The spectacle of the urban nocturne intensified the phantasmagoria of the modern city, characterized by a double topography between darkness and lighting, fear and euphoria.
The ground for the society of the spectacle was prepared with one of its key ingredients: the paralyzing devotion for the technological.
