Abstract

In this paper it is argued that from middle Formative times on the road from Oaxaca’s midlands to the Isthmus was along the Río Grande valley and not across the Mixe mountains. To support this idea evidence is drawn from documental archives and from the results of an archaeological survey carried out in the San Dionisio Ocotepec country, on the eastern limits of Oaxaca’s central valleys.
