Abstract

This paper places the relationship between Monte Alban and Teotihuacan within a changing framework, which includes three major stages defined by their predominantly economic, political and religious character. A more detailed analysis of the second stage suggests, that around 350-400 A. D. The encounter between a primatepriest of Teotihuacan and the Zapotec ruler brought about changes in the latter’s office, and the adoption of a quatripartite world-order akin to that at Teotihuacan.
