Abstract
Objective: To determine the proportion of caries and deficient oral hygiene in school children from an indigenous community in Oaxaca. Methods: A transverse analytic study in 100 school children was carried out. Communication with authorities, parents and school children was established to obtain the informed consent. An interview to each school child was carried out as well as oral examination by a standardized surveyor in DMTF index (kappa 85%) and in oral hygiene simplified index to determine oral hygiene. Results: The proportion of caries experience was 88% and 71% in permanent teeth, caries was associated to variables such as: eating cookies and candies more than twice a week (RMP 29.62, IC95% 6.64-132.15, p = 0.00 y RMP 6.90, IC95%1.89-25.25, p = 0.005). The proportion of deficient oral hygiene was of 100%, association was founded with variables such as eating cookies, sodas and candies more than twice a week (RMP 5.34, IC95% 2.92-64.14, p = 0.00; RMP 13.70, IC95% 1.60-17.86, p = 0.08; RMP = 6.13 IC95% 2.42-15.52, p = 0.00). Conclusions: Isolating and poverty in communities and the lack of information and odontological services increase the risk and accelerate the presence of disorders in oral cavity having an impact in quality of life.
