Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of included teeth and associated pathology in the population who attended the dental clinic of the Mexicali Dental School of the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California. A retrospective study of the year 2003 was made and the clinical records and radiographic studies of 3,449 patients who attended the dental clinic of the dentistry school during that year were evaluated. There were 2,865 patients over 17 (mean age of 30.76). The patients that presented one dental inclusion or more were 767 (26.77%). A total of 1,411 included teeth were found, analyzed and the position and localization was registered. The most frequently found included teeth were the mandibular third molars (79.29%), followed by maxillary third molars (19.71%) and maxillary canines (0.57%). The second molars adjacent impacted teeth which presented periodontal bone loss of more than 5 mm on their distal surfaces were 6.02%. Caries was found on the distal aspects of the second molars in approximately 3.96% of the cases. The resortion of the adjacent teeth and the enlargement of the space corresponding to the pericoronary folicule was found in relatively few cases (4.82%).
