Abstract

It is important to have a correct apical seal in root canal treatments because 60% of these fail due to an incomplete obturation. The aim of this study was to compare the apical microleakage between lateral compactation and vertical compaction with system B®. Thirty extracted teeth were used; they were prepared with Pro-Taper® files and divided into four groups. Group 1: Teeth obturated with system B®. Group 2: Teeth obturated with lateral compactation technique. Group 3: Negative control. And, Group 4: Positive control. All the groups were left in Indian ink for five days and went through a clearing process. They were observed in a fotomicroscopy at 5x magnification. Linear ink leakage was measured. A statistical significant difference was found; the lateral compactation technique had more apical leakage than the vertical compactation with system B®. It can be concluded that vertical compactation with system B® has a better apical seal because its content is formed primarily of gutta-percha.
