Abstract

Dental caries continues to affect a significant proportion of the pediatric population, due to several factors that contribute to develop this sickness. The purpose of this study was to identify the possible association between dental caries and blood type groups in a pediatric population from the Estancias de Beneficio y Desarrollo Infantil ISSSTE in Mexico City. One hundred children, 61 boys and 39 girls, ages between 3 to 7, were clinically examined to determine their dental status and medical history. Decay, extracted and filled teeth index (def) was determined for primary and mixed dentition. Blood type was recorded also. Distribution of blood type was O = 56%, A = 34%, AB = 5% and B = 5%. Distribution of def in group A was 0.483 ± 0.408. For group B 0.717 ± 0.701. For group AB was 0.733 ± 1.102. In group O was 0.887 ± 0.492. Statistical analysis with ANOVA and T test (p < .05), between def and blood group was unable to show any association between different groups, so based on these results, it can be concluded that there is no relation between def and blood type groups.
