Asociación entre índice de masa corporal y las condiciones bucales en escolares

Abstract

Objective: To determinate the association and distribution between body mass Index (BMI) by age, sex and oral conditions for schoolchildren from 11 to 15 years old. Material and Methods: An analytic cross-sectional study was developed with a convenience sampling. The over-weight was evaluated by the BMI in 587 schoolchildren students, using as reference point the value established by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The oral examination was focused mainly on caries problem, dental fluorosis and oral hygiene, the pollsters were calibrated with a concordance index (Kappa) of 85% for caries problem and 90% for dental fluorosis. Data was statistical evaluated by χ2. Results: From 587 schoolchildren students, 307 of them (52.3%) were female and 280 (47.7%) were male. The over-weight prevalence was 18.1%. In relation with oral disturbances, the prevalence of caries was 86%, dental fluorosis was 46.8% and only 8% had excellent oral hygiene. When BMI and decayed tooth were associated, it was identified as a value χ2 = 83.93 (p = 0.025) and it associates him with the IHOS identified one value χ2 = 54.96 (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Obesity is a problem that has to be attended by a multidisciplinary team due to the fact that scoolchildren students with over-weight have a probability of 80% to be an obese adult, therefore it can become a social, cultural and health problem.
