Abstract
Diabetes is an important condition due to its high prevalence in the world population. Many investigations have showed the close relationship that exists between this condition and periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between the severity of periodontitis and glycemia, as well as to know the prevalence of diabetes in patients whom were attended in the Endoperiodontology Posgraduate Clinic at the FES Iztacala, UNAM, from November 2003 to June 2004. Glycemia lectures were obtained in 157 patients using an Accutrend GCT (Roche-Sintex) device and values were recorded and grouped, additional to this, periodontal pockets were measured with aWHO’s periodontal probe. Diabetes prevalence in this population was 22.29%. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient was applied to determine association between probing depths and values of glycemia; results showed a very weak positive correlation in two sextants and a very weak negative in four sextants. In conclusion, patients with hight levels of glycemia were periodontically more affected than those without this systemic condition.
