Abstract
The objective of this evaluation was to determine the pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma and multicentric peripheral ossifying fibroma prevalence, in order to establish the frequency by gender and age, as well as to identify its more frequent localization. The archives of histopathological studies from the Pathology Laboratory of the Postgraduate School of Dentistry of the UNAM, from 2002 to 2006 was reviewed; the total number of histopathological diagnosis was 4,471, of this 309 cases, 182 (58.8 %); 43 (13.9%) and 84 (27.1%) correspond to the lesions above mentioned respectively. The major distribution of these lesions by groups of age was observed between the second and fifth decade of life, the female gender was the most affected with 64.1% compared with the male gender with 35.9%; a statistically significant difference exists χ2 = 24.081 p < 0.045, that is to say, women are more susceptible to present reactive lesions. Because of this lesions are clinically similar; the definitive diagnosis is made by the histopathological exam. It is necessary the periodontist to know this lesions, in order to diagnose and treat them properly.
