The Long Road to the Kaka’is

Abstract

The Kaka’is are an indigenous Kurdish-speaking population belonging to the Yarsan religion, originating in the Zagros Mountains in what is now northern Iraq. There are currently around 200,000 Kaka’is in Iraq, but due to a history of persecution, the community is at risk of disappearing. This article, based on the book The Kakais of Iraq: History, Beliefs and Culture (Corticelli, 2025), explores their origins and their resilience, with an emphasis on their values of humility, peace, and tolerance, as well as on the contemporary challenges they face in preserving their cultural heritage and gaining official recognition in a context marked by sectarian violence and institutional discrimination. At the same time, it examines their practices of cultural resistance and recent efforts to document and transmit their collective memory—efforts that are essential to ensuring the continuity of their religious and cultural identity.
