Abstract

With changes going on in Latin America in the last decades the social theory in the region has moved away from its own tradition. Instead of taking a dogmatic approach to bring it back, it's important to revise such terms as neo-oligarchy within the present context. It means to understand the continuity of known structures and other forms of power. The recent conservative trend highlights the strength of traditional forms of domination, in addition to rely on recent forms of investigation, we need to situate historically the present to understand the nature of power, and those interest groups that broadly determine its course of action. This will help us refocus, and broaden our understanding  of democracy.
