Abstract

This essay does a brief overview of Mexico’s political conditions by looking into the most significant changes taking place during the last 13 years. It sets the popular EZLN uprising of 1994 as starting point of the analysis. In this context, Mexico, unlike the recent developments in the Latin American region and countries rejecting a private capitalist development, has favored neoliberal economics and has endorsed American foreign policy throughout the region. We face a few challenges ahead of us. The left could change the structure of the dominant power or the right could reinvigorate its authoritarian demeanor. For a grassroot alternative to emerge, social fragmentation must seize to exist, the country should abandon neoliberalism and it ought to stop backing the U. S. government.
