Peer review process
PENÍNSULA (ISSN: 1870-5766) is a biannual peer-reviewed journal that prioritizes the publication of works on the south and southeast of Mexico, as well as the Caribbean and Central America, although it is also open to proposals on texts from other latitudes. It is published by the Peninsular Center for Humanities and Social Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, located in Mérida, Yucatán. Articles and critical reviews of new publications are accepted under the commitment that they have not been simultaneously submitted to another medium. The writings must be unpublished and can be presented in Spanish, English or Yucatecan Mayan. The articles are evaluated by specialists. Two favorable opinions are required for publication. If one of the referees does not approve the submitted text, it is subject to a third evaluation. Two negative opinions imply the rejection of the article. The process is anonymous. When a text is accepted for publication, PENÍNSULA reserves the right to make the necessary formal modifications to achieve greater uniformity and clarity in the presentation.

Responsibilities or behavior of the Editorial Board
The Editorial Board defines and makes public the rules for the publication of articles in the journal, and is always ready to justify and analyze any controversy in the evaluation process.
It defines the evaluation criteria and makes them known to the authors.
It selects the texts that correspond to the editorial line of the journal and comply with the academic requirements established in the editorial standards.
It promotes the academic and scientific standards of the contents of the journal.
It ensures compliance with the review processes (i.e., “double-blind” or “peer” review), ensuring that the selected works are reviewed by two or more specialists in the subject addressed and maintaining the anonymity of both the author(s) and the reviewers.
It assumes the responsibility of duly informing the authors of the phase of the editorial process in which the submitted text is, as well as the resolutions of the review.
Responsibilities or behavior of the Editors
The editors are responsible for everything published in the journal. They strive to meet the needs of readers and authors, as well as to constantly improve the quality and impact of the journal and promote its academic and scientific standards.
The editors are willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when necessary.
The editors' decision to accept or reject a work for publication is based solely on the importance of the article, the originality, clarity and the relevance that the work represents for the journal.
The editors are committed to guaranteeing the confidentiality of the evaluation process.
After the review process and as long as the article is declared "publishable" by the reviewers, the Editorial Board and the editors are responsible for deciding which articles will be published in the journal.
The editors evaluate the manuscripts and their intellectual content without distinction of skin color, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, ethnic origin, nationality or political philosophy of the authors. The editors do not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, or other editorial advisors.
Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript are not used in personal research by the editors or any member of the journal without the express written consent of the author. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review are confidential and are not used for personal advantage. The editors make fair and impartial decisions to ensure a fair and appropriate peer review process.
Authors' Responsibilities
Authors must ensure that their manuscripts are the product of their original work and that the data have been obtained in an ethical manner. In addition, they must ensure that their work has not been previously published or is not being considered for another publication. A work will be considered previously published when any of the following situations occur:
When the full text has been published.
When extensive fragments of previously published materials form part of the text submitted to the journal.
When the work submitted to the journal is contained in proceedings published in extenso (40% or more of the text content).
These criteria refer to previous publications in print or electronic form.
In order to publish their work, authors must strictly follow the editorial standards for the publication of articles.
Authors of original research reports must present an accurate description of the work performed, as well as an objective argument for its importance.
Each document must contain sufficient information and references to allow others to use the work. Fraudulent or deliberately inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
Authors must ensure that they have written the original works in their entirety. Sources used must be properly recorded. Authors must cite publications that have been influential in the nature of the work presented. Information obtained privately, through conversations, correspondence or discussions with third parties, must not be used without explicit written permission of the source.
Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution or interpretation of the study. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. The lead author(s) should be listed as co-author(s).
History of the journal
PENÍNSULA is about to publish its fortieth issue and celebrate twenty years of existence. Its first issue was published in 2005 by the then Academic Unit of Social Sciences and Humanities (UACSHUM) under the direction of Dr. Mario Humberto Ruz who served as its first editor. Since then, the Journal has been supported by an editorial board made up of specialists from various disciplines.
In 2007, the UACSHUM became the Peninsular Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (CEPHCIS). Since then, the PENINSULA journal has strengthened the regional identity assumed by the department, while increasing its image linked to UNAM.
Throughout its history, in addition to Mario Ruz, the Journal has had enthusiastic editors. Daniela Maldonado Cano, Ricardo López Santillán, Rubén Torres Martínez, Rosa Torras Conagla, David de Angel, Virginia Carrillo, Amada Rubio and currently, María Fernanda Valencia Suárez and Rodrigo Llanes Salazar, -with the support of Salvador Tovar, head of publications and the editorial team made up of anthropologist Daniela Maldonado Cano (q.e.p.d 2024), designer Samuel Flores, engineer Marcos Garcia Yeh, and more recently Dr. Carlos A. Martínez-, have given growth and continuity to the editorial work and contributed to making PENÍNSULA today a scientific and academic journal of excellence, backed by an editorial board made up of experts from different disciplines and from different parts of the world.
Volume XX-2 December 2024, will be the first published solely digitally.
