The function of the paradoxes in physics and the case of Paul Ehrenfest
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article proposes a typology for the analysis of paradoxes in the physical sciences and offers examples through some elements of the work of Paul Ehrenfest, who was characterized by a particular interest in identifying them as a form of critical exercise in his field. The suggested classification proposes four cases: the direct conflict with the actual experiment, that which arises frankly with the logical consistency of a very specific conceptual apparatus, the one which results from the relationship and possible inconsistencies between theories in principle independent in physics and finally, the conflict with common sense. Throughout the article the relationship between real experiments, thought experiments and paradoxes is analyzed, trying to clarify the role of the latter based on the reductionist nature of physics.
