Social determinants and state of dentition in schoolchildren in San Felipe del Progreso, Mexico State

Abstract
Introduction: Social determinants are the social conditions under which individuals develop. There is association between some oral problems and the inequitable economical distribution. Objective: To identify the association among some social determinants and caries experience of children from San Felipe del Progreso. Methods: Cross-sectional study. 83 children from 6 to 12 years were selected and they answered a sociodemographic questionnaire. Caries experience was evaluated following the WHO criteria. Descriptive measures were obtained from sociodemographic variables and the ANOVA test was applied for the mean of DMFT/dmft in each socioeconomic level. Results: 47.0% of the population belongs to the lower class, presenting a higher mean of decayed teeth (4.53±2.57) and 33.3% of the children with regular hygiene. Conclusions: It was found a higher mean of decayed teeth within the lowest socioeconomic levels as well as in the basic scholar levels of the parents.
