The importance of energy for economic growth in Mexico

Abstract

The present research analyzes the macroeconomic productivity of labor and capital in Mexico from 1993 to 2013. The objective is to identify the variables that can influence their behavior with a special emphasis in energy. This is done through an aggregated production function which successfully identifies the influence of capital, remunerated labor, technological change and energy on the real aggregated productivity of labor, capital and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) potential growth. The energy prices direct impact in the use of energy is identified, as well as their indirect impact in productivity and economic growth. The results of this research introduce the reader to the analysis of the 2014 Energy Reform with an emphasis in its future challenges.
