Use of reduced version of Depression Scale of the Epidemiological Research Center (CES-D Spanish acronym) in the Mexican elderly population
Main Article Content
Abstract
Depression is the most frequent mental disorder that occurs in older adults in the world. It is imperative to identify possible cases of depression in older adults by means of instruments to obtain relevant information quickly (time of application), and efficiently. The present study has allowed to determine the psychometric characteristics of the reduced version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D, 7 items) in older adults and its capacity of discrimination among clinically significant symptoms of depression and the presence of other conditions (construct validity); compared to the revised version (CES-DR, 35 items) and the medical diagnosis made by the geriatrician. Results show that the reduced version of CES-D (7 items) presents acceptable psychometric properties and it is a useful tool for detecting the presence of clinically significant signs of depression in Mexican older adults.
