Abstract

Public transport provides essential services to society. However, it is also part of various sustainability challenges,
particularly those related to air quality and energy security. Therefore, this article aims to analyze the viability of
the trolleybus as a sustainable public transport system. The method used is the descriptive contrast between three
means of transport: the Metro, the Metrobús and the Trolleybus. To achieve this objective, first, a brief overview
of the urban transport´s sustainability problems is presented. Later, an account of the trolleybus’ trajectory around
the world is offered. In this regard, it is argued that the trolleybus is a sustainable public transport option. Finally, it is concluded that the experience observed in other cities with the use of the trolleybus provides possible ideas to
contribute to the sustainable development of Mexico City.
