Abstract

In spite of its frequency in Aztec iconography, myths, calendar and many other aspects of Aztec daily life, rabbit remains are rarely found in the excavations of Mexica settlements. To which degree might this contrast precisely correspond with its role in the cosmogony? Through a study of faunal remains from several well-excavated sites from the center of Mexico, we aim to establish the exact place of this species in everyday Mexica life.
