Abstract

This work takes a first step towards the semantic analysis of Maya texts. The term “text” is used in the more profound sense of the word, considering it a form of communication within a particular system of signs. Therefore, analysis of the word “Itzamná” uses the deity as represented in the Dresde Codex, as well as its correspondence with literary and lexicographical texts from Colonial times, in order to reach a definition of the various meanings codified by the name.
