Simetría y asimetrías faciales en una serie de mujeres y hombres. Estudio comparativo entre mexicanos y coreanos

Abstract
With the purpose of evaluating facial asymmetries, we analyzed the standardized frontal facial photographs of 302 women and 551 men from Mexico, respectively with a mean age of 20.44 ± 6.23 and 22.17 ± 7.95 years. For each face we obtained 11 direct measurements, we added 3 of them, calculated an index, and established degrees of deviation from the midline. The results clearly showed for the joint sample and for men a left facial dominance (directional asymmetry), but women had both a directional asymmetry, plus fluctuant asymmetry, since there was equilibrium of left and right facial dominance. Comparing our data with those of Wu-Chul Song et al. (2007) we found a fundamental difference: in both populations the percentage of individuals with facial symmetry and asymmetry were similar. But asymmetry among Koreans was more common to the right side and to the left side on Mexicans.
