Abstract

This paper presents the biodemographic characteristics of an Argentinian Toba population that emigrated from the Chaco to Villa lapi, Kilmes, in the Buenos Aires Province. Their data are compared with those of a highly endogamic Toba group, from Fortín Lavalle. Both groups were similar: a large nuniber of individuals under 19 years of age, few elderly, similar family size, with high fecundity in men and women. The migrants show significantly less pre-reproductive deaths and a lower value of the index of total selection, that may reflect better living conditions in this group. They also have lower reproductive isolation, but the index is in the higher limits that have been identificated to have and effect on the biology of the group.
