Abstract

This essay proposes to appeal to indigenous narratives as fundamental sources for the production of educational materials to teach reading and writing. While considering the necessities of a bilingual and bicultural education, the use of these materials may have the potential of reaffirming one of the most important messages that are left by each cultural tradition. To justify this goal, we argue in favor of the significance that mythical discourses may be put together as reading texts that can reflect the symbolic traditions that are characteristic of each culture. They are ways of codifying structures of reality, that are capable of expressing lhe organization of the real, in accordance to a specific social semantics. This scholarly recuperation of narratives, and particularly of mythology, even though probably not sacred anymore, will contribute to recover particular traditions as well as specific ethic, symbolic and normative codes.
