Abstract

In this work, we’ll describe the way the shaman concept has been introduced in Mexican and Mesoamerican anthropology. Through a historical overview, we’ll explain how shamanism has been studied in this region, how it has been diffused among non specialized publics and how the study of this particular subject has contributed to the understanding of Mesoamerican native peoples. Nevertheless, the intention of this article is also to criticize all those anthropologists who have tended to adopt exogenous concepts and theories without a previous analysis.
