Abstract

The purpose of this work is to point out the importance of the Late Pre-Classic period in the Candelaria River region, and its relation to the Guatemalan Peten. During the 1990s, much information was generated on the Late Pre-Classic characterized by distinctive architecture, the triadic pattern, the modeled stucco masks, and some iconographic elements. We also note the need of more study of the Middle Pre-Classic, since in this period one already finds many of the elements that will later become characteristic. Special emphasis is given to the masks of El Tigre, since they are both highly distinctive and attractive elements of the period.
