Abstract

REGRESSION ANALYSIS WAS UTILIZED TO DETERMINE WHICH HABITAT CHARACTERISTICS WERE RELEVANT IN EXLAINING THE ABUNDANCE OF PHAETORNIS SUPERCILIOSUS, MOMOTUS MOMOTA, MIONECTES OLEAGINEUS, THRYOTHORUS MACULIPECTUS, HENICORHINA LEUCOSTICTA, BASILEUTERUS CULICIVORUS, HABIA RUBICA AND H. FUSCICAUDA IN LOS TUXTLAS. STUDY SITES WERE SELECTED THROUGH A STRATIFIED RANDOM PROCESS FROM A POOL OF ALL 1 KM2 BLOCKS LOCATED WITHIN 5 KM OF A ROAD. BLOCKS WERE CLASSIFIED INTO THREE CATEGORIES: LOW SECOND GROWTH (< 3 M TALL), TALL SECOND GROWTH, AND FOREST (> 10 M TALL). DURING JANUARY-FEBRUARY 1993, WE SAMPLED THE BIRD COMMUNITY AND DETERMINED THE VEGETATION STRUCTURE. OUR ANALYSIS SUGGESTED THAT THE EIGTH SPECIES ARE PREDOMINANTLY FOREST SPECIES, BUT THEY MAY ACCEPT ALTERATIONS, IF THE ARBOREAL STRATUM IS MAINTAINED.
