Abstract

QUANTITATIVE PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF FOUR SPECIES INCLUDED IN TWO NOMINAL GENERA OF THE PTERINOTREMATIDAE (MONOGENEA) BASED ON 17 MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERS WITH 18 APOMORPHIC CHARACTER STATES, PRODUCED ONE SINGLE MOST PARSIMONIOUS TREE, WITH A CONSISTENCY INDEX OF 0.9 AND 20 STEPS. THE CLADOGRAM OBTAINED SUPPORT THE MONOPHYLY OF THE PTERINOTREMATIDAE BASED ON SIX SYNAPOMORPHIES. OUR RESULTS SUPPORTS THE IDEA THAT HOST SPECIFICITY IS A PROPERTY OF ADAPTATION RATHER THAN SPECIATION. WE DISCUSS SEVERAL HYPOTHESIS THAT EXPLAIN COEVOLUTIONARY AND BIOGEOGRAPHICAL PATTERNS THAT WE DISCOVERED IN THE PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS.
