Social skills and their differences in university students

Abstract

The importance of promoting social skills in university students is due to the fact that social interaction is the basis of their professional performance. The objectives of this study were to obtain the construct validity of the Social Skills Scale and identify their differences in university students. 200 students at UNAM, 100 at CU and 100 at FES Zaragoza careers such as Biology, Chemical Engineering, Surgeon and Psychology collaborated in this study. Result of an exploratory factorial analysis, a valid and reliable scale that explains 49.2, α = 0.707 was obtained. It was found that CU students have greater abilities to solve conflicts than those at FES Zaragoza. Regarding sex differences, from CU students, men have greater communication skills than women. By career, the differences were in communication skills, Psychology students had higher scores than those in Chemical Engineering. It was concluded that social skills are necessary to have satisfactory interpersonal relationships and optimal professional performance.
