Family environment scale for adolescents (EAFA)

Abstract

Family is a complex process in which multiple factors intervene. The characteristics of individuals, the social context and the historical moment make the family a unique, changing and complex phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to obtain the construct validity of the Family Environment Scale for Adolescents. 391 adolescents from public secondary schools in Mexico City, age ranging from 14 to 16 years old (M = 14, SD = 0.56) participated in this research. An exploratory factor analysis was carried out, which grouped 25 items into five factors: parent conflict, lack of family communication, lack of family habits and rules, hostility, and family acceptance. The scale explains a variance of 52% and has a global Cronbach Alpha of 0.899. It is concluded that a valid and reliable scale was obtained to evaluate the family environment perceived by adolescents.
