INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Vertientes is a biannual publication that specializes in the area of health issued by the Division of Graduate Studies and Research at the Facultad de Estudios SuperioresZaragoza, UNAM.

Vertientes Is primarily aimed to researchers, professionals and students interested in advancing knowledge of the area of health.

 

The aim of the journal is to disseminate information on current knowledge related to health issues: basic areas, clinical, epidemiological and related fields.

 

The magazine includes articles from guest experts and original items previously approved by the Editorial Committee, ranking in the categories: original articles, brief review articles, monographs related to the area of health, Letters to the editor (forum of communication with the editor), essays, short communications, undergraduate thesis, reviews, news and events in the area of health.

Peer Review Process

EDITORIAL POLICY

Extend an acknowledgment to the author when the paper is received. The editor will inform the corresponding author the evaluation report after the rejection or acceptance, as well as corrections or suggestions to the text.

Papers that do not fulfill to the requirements will not be received.

If the paper meets the criteria will be submitted for peer review chosen by the Editorial Committee.

The editor in chief decides on the acceptance or rejection of articles based on the report and recommendations of the reviewers.

The dates of receipt and acceptance will be printed on each item. The corresponding author will receive galley proofs and will be responsible for the final version of the article. Two reprints will be sent to the corresponding author free of charge. Color photographs can be published at an additional cost covered by the author.

The material published in the journal may be reproduced in whole or in part only with written authorization fron Vertientes, provided they include the corresponding citation in the references.

 

LANGUAGES

Articles may be written in English or Spanish.

 

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

According to the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (Vancouver Guidelines).

It is essential that all work submitted is accompanied by a letter that includes the approval of the authors of the paper content (including tables and figures) and the order of appearance of their names, the acceptance of transfer of copyright to Vertientes, where the work is published; statement that it is an original work that has not been published or submitted for publication, in whole or in part, and the name and signature of the authors.

Also, the letter must specify the author responsible for correspondence: full address, fax, phone and email.

Submit the work in quadruplicate (original and three copies) and  ZIP disk or CD-ROM, including tables and figures.

The authors should keep a copy of all submitted materials,  as  any material  subjected to revision, whether is published or not will not be returned.

Send the text printed on letter size white paper (21.6 x 27.9 cm), single-sided, double spaced, font size is 12 points. The approximate content of one page is 25 lines and 66 characters per line. Prepare the computer work in any of the following word processors: Microsoft Word or ASCII (Macintosh or IBM compatible).

 

The graphs and figures will be sent on separate sheets  and in the same order they are listed in the job. Number all pages consecutively, taking apart the tables and figures.

Original articles: Have a length of 15 to 25 pages from the homepage to the references, including tables and figures not exceeding 8.

Short articles: 5 to 8 pages, including tables and figures that do not exceed  2.

Review articles: 15 to 30 pages, including tables and figures that do not exceed  10.

Trials: 5 to 15 pages, including tables and figures should not exceed 5.

Research notes: 5 to 10 pages.

 

ABBREVIATIONS AND SCIENTIFIC NAMES

The abbreviations are explained only the first time they appear in the text and using the abbreviations ISO (International Standards Organization.

Measurement Units

The measures of length, height, weight and volume should be reported in metric units (meter, kilogram or liter) or their decimal multiples.

Temperatures should be given in degrees Celsius. Blood pressures should be given in millimeters of mercury.

All measurements hematologic or clinical chemistry should be reported in the metric system in terms of the International System of Units (SI). Editors may request that authors use alternative units or non-SI prior to publication.

 

MANUSCRIPT

The manuscript's components comply with the following sequence:

 

1.- Front or title page

Must complete writing and preferably short (not exceeding 50 characters). Add title after (the) name (s) of author (s), address, fax and email the author

 

2.- Summary in Spanish

150 to 200 words in one paragraph followed by a maximum of 8 keywords.

 

3.-Summary in English (Abstract)

English translation of the title, abstract and keywords (keywords).

Keywords: (keywords): According to the recommendations of the IOCUNESCO, the authors recommend the use of ASFA Thesaurus to identify keywords (keywords) right of your items. Terms should be used in the list of Medical Terms (MeSH acronym in English) of Index Medicus, if there is an appropriate term in that list and is not available in the newly introduced terms, present terms may be used.

 

4.- Article Text

Should be written in clear and logical way, with sections complementary and not redundant. Try to follow the usual sections (Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusions) as soon as possible.

Be numbered according to the sequence of appearance in the text. In it only include the reference number corresponding Arabic, printed in superscript.

References should adhere to the rules adopted by the U.S. National Library and the Index Medicus.

The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus, published annually in the January issue of the index or as indicated by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

 

Magazine

a) Name (s) and initial (s) the name or names of authors, followed by a period at the end (list all authors).

b) Full title of the article, with capitalization of only the first letter of the initial word (and names), followed by a period.

c) Abbreviations of journal, from the letters of the abbreviation is not put any punctuation, not the end.

d) Year of publication, followed by a semicolon.

e) Volume, in Arabic numerals, followed by a colon.

f) complete page numbers (initial and final), separated by a hyphen.

Example:

Isaacs D, Altman DG, Valman HB. Racial Differences in red cell indices. J Clin Pathol 1986; 39: 105-109.

 

Books and other monographs

a) Name (s) and initial (s) of the name, or authors, followed by a period at the end.

b) Title of the book using only capitalized the first letter of the initial word, followed by a period.

c) Number of edition, if other than the first, followed by a period.

d) City where the book was published, followed by a colon, when shown more than a place to host the editorial, is used which appears first, the city name can be translated into Spanish.

e) Name of publisher, followed by a semicolon.

f) Year of publication (of the last edition cited if more than one), followed by a semicolon whether to display the volume, and two points if it is stated the number of pages followed by a period and the letter p

g) Number of volume if more than one, preceded by the abbreviation "vol." followed by a colon.

h) Number of cited page, in the event that the quote refers to the chapter of a book, indicate the first and last page of the chapter, separated by a hyphen

7 .- Tables and figures

 

If the article has pictures or graphics should be sent in a separate file.

Present the material in the form of tables double-spaced and on separate sheets.

Make sure each box-table or figure is cited in the text.
The use of too many tables in relation to the length of the text may produce difficulties for the design of the pages.

 

Charts and Tables

Roman should be numbered, according to the sequence of appearance in the text. All tables must be self-explanatory table, consisting of a full title, each column with a title, notes and description of the abbreviations at the foot of the tables, and clear indications of the measures used. Omit the use of vertical and horizontal.

 

Figures

The figures are sorted by Arabic numbers according to the sequence of appearance in the text. If they are taken from other publications, send a copy of the authorization of the author or the editor for publication.

Submit each figure separately, sequentially numbered, containing the title and the explanations of the symbols, arrows, numbers or letters used to designate the different parts of the picture.

If you use pictures of people, subjects can not be identified or their pictures must be accompanied by written permission to use the photograph (see right of privacy protection of patients).

 

We can send in electronic format, and if necessary will ask the letter.

 

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION OF ILLUSTRATIONS

(Once the manuscript has been accepted)

You can send illustrations to us either online or on a physical data medium. By e-mail (only for small data volumes less than 2 MB) or on 3.5” diskette, ZIP diskette or CD-ROM. Send us the illustrations separately from the text. Image files for production purposes should not be embedded in a word-processor file.

Halftone images

Store colour illustrations as CMYK and monotone as grayscale in TIFF or JPEG format. When using JPEG format choose maximum quality instead of high compression in the options window. (Suitable programs: Photoshop, Picture Publisher, Photo Paint, etc.)

Vector graphics Vector graphics exported from a drawing program should be stored in EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format.

Fonts used in the graphics (use preferably Times) must be included.

Please do not draw with hairlines. The minimum line width is 0.2 mm (0.5 pt) measured at the final scale. Do not use colour if an illustration is to be reproduced in black and white (Suitable programs: Freehand, Illustrator, Corel Draw...)

Most presentation programs (Excel, Power Point...) produce data that cannot be processed since they do not support the export of EPS data.
