Abstract

This article analyzes the efforts undertaken by social, political, legal and organizational sectors concerned with equality, with the United Nations as a pivot. It lists the most significant milestones that have been achieved over the last few decades and the obstacles and difficulties that have so far hindered the recognition and respect of women’s rights and prerogatives, regardless of origin, race, color, age, culture, language, social class or group and any other aspect, characteristic or situation. It also out- lines the main commitments and obligations that governments and civil society (organized or otherwise) have repeatedly engaged in and whose fulfilment has been frustrating and disappointing. It emphasizes the need, particularly for women and civil society, to cement and broaden awareness of the legitimacy, legality, morality and necessity of finding means, measures and actions that prove more intelligent and efficient for achieving the main objective of this cause: full equality with men. Lastly, it stresses the fundamental role of the government to guarantee the fulfilment of these goals in the best and quickest possible way.
