Abstract

Zygmunt Bauman's work has emerged as a significant contribution to critical thinking aimed at redefining and expanding the margins of disciplinary reflection, to incorporate trends and events that have exposed the limits of the complex process of construction of Modernity. Among the topics brought to the field of sociological inquiry, an important place has been occupied by the Holocaust. The article argues that the analysis of the event is subsumed in the conceptualization of Modernity, as articulated by the Enlightenment, disregards the theoretical and practical struggles to define it and its impact on the Jewish condition, and extends its analysis to the conceptualization of the victims, their specificity, the approach to memory and the implications of the links between morality and political criticism.

Judit Bokser Misses-Liwerant, * Este articulo retoma y reformula elaboraciones previas que han sido vertidas en “Los dilemas del judaísmo en la Modernidad” (2002); “Modernidad y Holocausto: algunas reflexiones críticas en torno a Bauman” (con Gilda Waldman, 2002)) y “El Holocausto: memoria, víctimas y moralidad. Judit Bokser Misses-Liwerant es licenciada y maestra en ciencia política por la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén, así como doctora en Ciencias Políticas y Sociales por la unam. Es profesora titular de la Facultad de Ciencia Políticas y Sociales de la unam (México), así como Distinguished Visiting Professor de la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén. Es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI), Nivel iii, y miembro de la Academia Mexicana de Ciencias. Sus líneas de investigación son: globalización, transnacionalismo, teoría política, judaísmo contemporáneo, identidades colectivas y modernidades múltiples. Ha sido autora y editora de 15 libros y publicado más de cien artículos y capítulos en revistas y libros especializados. Entre sus publicaciones más recientes destacan: Reconsidering Israel-Diaspora Relations (coeditado con Eliezer Ben Rafael y Yosi Gorni) (2014); “Globalization, transnationalism, diasporas: Facing new realities and conceptual challenges” (2015); “Thinking multiples modernities from Latin America’s. perspective: complexity, periphery and diversity” (2016).
