Abstract

The main purpose of this article Is to analyze the political events that shaped the Mexican foreign policy towards the Central American nations during a crucial period: 1979-1988.

This text covers two important issues: the activist character of José López Portillo’s foreign policy and later the multilateral actions taken by Miguel de la Madrid's government.

Through this analysis, it is possible to grasp the importance of some of the events that took place on a historical time in which Mexico adopted an activist position towards the social change movements in the Central American area.
