Abstract

This article aims at analyzing the role that political leaders have played in the process of democratization in diverse geographical areas dating back to the second half of the 80's. Thus, the authors suggest a theoretical model which defines the role played by the environment and by the individual respectively in the context of societies undergoing change. The analytical proposal focuses on four hypotheses on the centrality of leadership which explain the variables that determine the rise and fall of leaders during the process of political change.
