El rescate de la utopía

Federico Reyes Heroles

Abstract

The article explores the question of the validity —or not— of the utopian thought at the end of the 20th century. To find an answer, the writer makes a “trip” through the significance that utopian ideologies have had in the West. Helped by thinkers of the stature of Isaiah Berlin, Karl Popper, Agnes Heller and Max Horkheimer among others, the author criticizes each one of the arguments, postulates, reasons and proposals of utopian ideology so that it may be understood within a frame that is, in itself, contradictory with its spirit: modernity. The author finishes by defending, not only the permanence of utopias, but also the need to create new ones adequate for the end of this century and the beginning of the next.
