¿Guerras de religión en Europa Central?

Abstract

The author refutes Samuel P. Huntington’s, theses that maintain that next century will be characterized by what he calls “wars of civilizations” —which are nothing else but religious wars— between the western Christian civilization, the Islamic middle east, and the oriental Chinese. Analyzes some supposedly religious conflicts —including those supported by the theses of “ethnic cleanliness”— held mainly in areas like Serbia, Russia and Poland. The writer concludes that these violent clashes are, mainly, political-national rather than religious in character, and that this last element has been more of a pretext and instrument than a cause and mover of the wars. Instead of Huntington’s “culturalist” theses, doctor Meyer proposes one that includes three basic factors in its explanation: culture, politics and economy. Concludes that well understood religion never leads to holy war; rather, it lead to the (re)cognition of the other.
