Abstract

This article explores the different dimensions of the processes of globalization: the political, economic and social dimensions, giving special attention to the expressions found in the area of culture and communication. Globalization, which is considered a heterogeneous, unequal and partial phenomenon, is promoted by both State and private forces. Among the most important cultural expressions of globalization, the article underscores the standardization and massive expansion of products with a strong emotional, mercantile and ludicrous content. Concentration of mass media, through acquisitions, mergers, agreements, alliances and other mechanisms, foster globalization not only due to the territorial expansion of corporations but also because it promotes homogenization of cultural values and practices. The article also examines some of the most important changes undergone by the nation-States in order to readjust their strategies to the requirements of global forces.
