Abstract

This article is a contribution to the study of Paraguayan exile, in the framework of the burgeoning study of exile in the Social Sciences. As such, it presents an overview of one of the least researched cases of 20th century massive exile in the Americas, and traces the case of Rafael Barrett (1876-1910), a key figure of Paraguayan letters, and his descendants. Analyzing the case of the Barrett family –in which three generations experienced forced displacement from their country–, this study suggests the relevance of research into transnational and multi-generational aspects of the exile experience in the Americas.
