Hate Speech and the Limits of Free Speech in the United States

Abstract
The article analyzes the debate that exists in the United States about the limits and scope of freedom of expression, considering the most important Supreme Court cases on that topic. Against the argument that hate speech is an opposite dimension to freedom of expression, and consequently, it should be prohibited, it is shown how historically the United States Supreme Court has defended the constitutionality of expressions that can be considered offensive, degrading, or vulgar. The arguments of the justices to consider this type of expressions as part of freedom of expression are also shown, differentiating hate speech from hate crimes.
