THE CREATION OF THE BANK OF MEXICO AND THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE MEXICAN ECONOMY, 1917-1932

Abstract
This article examines the historical process that led to the creation of the Bank of Mexico and its role in economic reconstruction after the Mexican Revolution. It analyzes the Porfirian banking background, the monetary chaos of the civil war, the debates of the 1917 Constituent Congress, and the difficulties of establishing a single issuing bank. It also studies the foundation of the Bank of Mexico in 1925 and the 1932 reforms that fully granted it central bank functions. The article shows how the establishment of this institution was crucial to stabilizing the currency, reorganizing public finances, renegotiating external debt, and consolidating the foundations of a new institutional framework in the Mexican economy.
