VOLATILIDAD ESTOCÁSTICA DEL TIPO DE CAMBIO PESO-DÓLAR: EL RÉGIMEN FLOTANTE EN MÉXICO

Abstract
En este trabajo se presentan los resultados del análisis de la volatilidad de la paridad cambiaria del peso mexicano respecto al dólar mediante un modelo en el cual la distribución de la tasa de rendimiento o de apreciación (depreciación) del peso es una mezcla de distribuciones normales. La volatilidad cambiaria se modela como una variable estocástica cuyo proceso está determinado por una cadena de Markov con dos estados: uno con baja volatilidad y el otro con volatilidad alta. El modelo estimado nos permite identificar la existencia de dos regímenes o estados en la volatilidad cambiaria, pero la volatilidad del tipo de cambio analizado es menos persistente que la observada en otros tipos de cambios. También se documenta una probabilidad alta para el régimen de baja volatilidad, situación que puede considerarse congruente con una relativa estabilidad cambiaria.
