Abstract

Because of its importance to health, stress has been studied from different approaches mostly based on dualistic conceptions. Valuation people make about some situations that make them feel “stress” has been understood as part of a cognitive process that is one of the main causes of “stress” reactions. This work is based on a naturalistic approach and valuation is conceived as an extrasituational dimension of the so called stress behavior. On this basis a study to explore the possible functional correspondence between negative valuation participants made of several competence related to situations and referred stress reactions was made. An instrument to evaluate daily competences was applied to 347 participants. Results showed a high correlation between the two target dimensions, affective and valuative, and they suggest a functional correspondence between them. Discussion is focused on human capability to detach to present stimulating conditions.
