Abstract

This paper examines two issues that are distinct, yet directly linked: the key components of citizenship, and the factors that cut across citizenship and link it to other phenomena. More specifically, it look separately at two sets of issues:

a ) the five dimensions of citizenship (civil,

social, economic, cultural and political), and

b ) its four structural foundations (its legal foundation

or state recognition, its cultural foundation, practices or citizen-driven agency, and citizenship

institutions).
