Rediscovering the “other” Caribbean in the Tun tún de pasa y grifería of Luis Palés Matos

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to examine the unifying proposal of the Antilles of Luis Pales Matos’ Tun tún de pasa y grifería (Drumbeats of Kinkiness and Blackness) (1937). He belongs to a notable writers of the 1930 Generation. In his work, Pales Matos highlights what seems to encompass behind the inner soul of someone from Puerto Rico. To achieve his quest, he locates the black man in a fair place of the social scale. Furthermore, with Tun tún de pasa y grifería, he tries to create a brotherhood community between his country, Puerto Rico, and the neighboring Caribbean islands, even though there are major differences between the two physical spaces.
